The First Mortgage Removal Program (program) supports First Nations organisations to gain control over their property, giving them control of the full capital of their properties. The program enables First Nations organisations to borrow against their properties and invest in activities that enhance organisational autonomy and sustainability for the communities they service.
The removal of first mortgages supports First Nations organisations to:
- be the decision maker on issues affecting their organisation and community
- have greater control and choices regarding the use of their assets
- leverage economic development opportunities from their assets
- contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of First Nations communities.
